Hemp … really?

Hemp ... really?

We’re big believers in hemp. Why? Well simply put it’s probably the greatest plant there is – period.

It’s astonishing in many many ways and could make a claim as being one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented plant out there. Go ahead and say ‘hey I love hemp’ to a friend and see what their first reaction/thought is. But just consider the following mind boggling facts courtesy of

The Truth About Hemp:

‘Hemp is used to make over 25,000 consumer products. From hemp apparel and accessories to house wares and hempseed oil cosmetics, hemp is an eco-shopper’s dream. Some of the products made are: clothing, shoes, diapers, rope, canvas, cellophane, paints, fuels, chain lubricants, biodegradable plastics, paper, fiberboard, cement blocks, food, cosmetics, and soap. Hemp is the longest and strongest natural fiber known to man.’

And best of all Hemp, the original billion dollar crop, grows quickly and easily, but does not deplete the soil. Hemp actually returns nitrogen back to the soil, which improves soil fertility for subsequent rotated crops. There are numerous other benefits that we could list but why spoil the surprise. You should really discover more about this plant for yourself.

So far we used hemp because of its durability, absorbency, and it’s natural anti-microbial properties when it comes to cloth diapering products and accessories you might know us for. But since there are literally thousands upon thousands of things that can be made from hemp why stop at simply (yet amazing) things such as diapers and accessories? That’s exactly what we thought so that’s why are developing more killer products based on our favorite plant. Surprises are coming – that we can guarantee – so keep checking in with us every so often (or sign-up to our newsletter and we will keep you informed. No worries we will not bombard you with endless minutia.)

DURABILITY ala BabyKicks:

When we say hemp is durable, we mean it! Our Hemp Prefolds and JoeyBunz Inserts, for example, are known to last through multiple children (2,3, even 4 or more!) and can then be used as rags for accidents around the house (children, pets, spills, garage, etc.). As for absorbency, hemp is one of the leaders! It absorbs slowly, but thoroughly so it holds onto everything it pulls in and won’t let go. No one likes leaks. And, of course, hemp is natural! Read above if you aren’t sure why this matters, it’s important!

Facts in Bullet Form - Yeah!

Hey your still here?  Well good … check out some of the rather interesting Factoids on Hemp:

  • Hemp can displace cotton which is grown with massive amounts of chemicals harmful to people and the environment. Fifty percent of the world’s pesticides are sprayed on cotton.
  • Hemp fibers are longer, stronger, more absorbent, and more mildew-resistant than cotton. The original Levi Strauss jeans made for the Sierra gold miners were made of hemp sailcloth.
  • At a volume level of 81%, hemp oil is the richest known source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (the “good” fats). It is quite high in some essential amino acids, including gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a very rare nutrient also found in mother’s milk.
  • Hemp is good for the soil in which it’s grown, as opposed to other crops that deplete the soil of nutrients.
  • You can’t get high from industrial hemp.
  • Industrial hemp actually poses a threat to marijuana growers by cross-pollinating with their high THC plants, and greatly reducing the THC level in subsequent generations.
  • George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp.
  • Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper.
  • Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper.
