Customer Care

  • I am lost with all the Cloth Diaper specific terms … help!
No worries - we got you covered.  Check out our 'CD Lingo' section in the BabyKicks Classroom ...  and if that does not help then get in touch with us.  We will be happy to help solve this mystery.
  • My Nursing Pads are leaking!
Make sure the Nursing Pads have been prepped properly by boiling in water for 15-20 minutes to strip out all the natural oils.
  • What can I use for diaper rash while using your products?
Any cloth diaper safe rash ointment is save to use with our products, as well as coconut oil.
  • How often do you recommend diaper changes?
We do not recommend going longer than 1.5 to 2 hours between changes. Leaving a child in a soiled diaper is the main cause of rashes.
  • What do you wear on the top of the diapers?
We recommend using either a PUL, fleece, or wool cover when needed. There are some brilliant funky colors and patterns to choose from. They wash great, last for years, and look really cute! Our Premium Pocket and Basic Pocket Diapers do not require a separate cover.
  • Will my baby get a diaper rash if I use cloth diapers?
Cloth diapers are no more likely to cause diaper rash than disposable diapers. And, we find that babies in cloth are less likely to get rashes. Below are the findings of a recent study: Parents who use disposable diapers in the belief that they will prevent diaper rash in their babies are misguided, according to new research. A study of 14,000 babies has shown that the type of diaper used is not significant in relation to incidence of diaper rash. The findings contradict the common belief that disposable diapers are better at preventing diaper rash than cloth ones. The report concludes that “disposable diapers give little protection". The study, Getting to the Bottom of Diaper Rash, was based on infants in the Bristol area. It also found that the early introduction of solids in the diet, particularly cereals, made the condition worse. The research, reported in this month’s British Journal of General Practice, is part of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood, or Children of the Nineties project. A quarter of babies in the study suffered diaper rash within the first four weeks of life. During this period, the relative risk of diaper rash for babies with towelling compared with those put only in disposable diapers was 1.16 (compared with 1.00 for disposable). With cases of “very bad” or “quite bad” diaper rash, “the type of diaper worn did not emerge as a significant factor”.* If you do have a rash problem the most likely cause is bacteria (diapers not getting clean enough). It could also be the dergent. Using too much will leave a residue in the diapers that can irritate the skin. We find that more frequent changing, extra rinsing, or modifying the wash routine takes care of this. *(Source: Bristol University.   Br J Gen Pract 1997 Aug;47(421):493-7 Getting to the bottom of nappy rash. • My diapers are leaking! What can I do?
There are a number of factors that contribute to leaks. Here are some steps to check and solutions to common issues.
    1. Make sure the diapers and inserts are prepped properly before first use.
    2. Only use cloth diaper friendly detergent. 3. Do not add commercial fabric softener. The only exception to this is Ecover Fabric Softener occasionally (1-2x per month). 4. Make sure all residual detergent is completely rinsed out. Detergent buildup can cause repelling, resulting in leaks. To strip diapers of residual detergent rinse them in HOT water 3-5x without detergent. 5. Do you have enough absorbency? Children’s wetting habits change as they grow and you may need to add more absorbency. Try adding a doubler or another JoeyBunz insert. Also, hemp absorbs slowly so it is a good idea to try a microfiber doubler on top of the hemp insert. This way if your little one decides to let Niagara Falls flow the microfiber will catch it quickly and the hemp will hold onto it over a period of time. This is a great combination. 6. Place a BabyKicks hemp Wipe right against baby’s skin on the soaker area. 7. Make sure the diapers are on sung, yet comfortable. There shouldn’t be any gaps and you should be able to easily slide a finger under the diaper in any area. If you see gaps, try a different rise and/or waist setting.
  • I’ve heard hemp gets “stinky”, is that true?
Hemp is very absorbent and requires thorough cleaning. Doing a cold soak with baking soda and detergent during each wash should be sufficient to keep your BabyKicks hemp clean and stink free. Soak for at least an hour and occasionally overnight. We have found that soaking is one of the simplest and best ways to keep diapers nice and clean.
  • My inserts have holes in them. What could be causing this?
Bleach or enzymes are the main cause of premature wear in natural products. If you feel that you have a defective product, please go to our Care & Warranty sections and follow the instructions there.
  • What could I use if my baby is leaking through the night?
You could try using a BabyKicks Hemp Prefold folded into thirds along with the included JoeyBunz. + common mistakes/quick tips:  check the rise & settings of diaper ...

Fitted Diapers

  • How many diapers will I need?
If you decide upon shaped or prefold diapers as your main diaper system you will need 15 -25 depending on three factors: 1. How often you expect to wash your diapers. If you want to wash your diapers daily you will need less than if you wash every two days. The diapers will also wear faster since they are used constantly. 2. What facilities you have for drying them. If your drying facilities consist of line drying, you will need more than someone who uses a tumble dryer. 3. The age of the baby. A newborn breastfed baby will use up to ten diapers in a 24hr period. From weaning to the age of one this will decrease to approximately 6-8 per day. A typical two year old will need 3-4 per day.

  • The diaper seems small, how will it last through potty learning?
The weight range for our diapers is approximate and depends on the size and shape of your baby. Our diapers are also designed to be trim without sacrificing security. We’ve made a super trim diaper without having to worry about leaks or messes. As your baby grows, play with the rise and closures to get a great fit.
  • The pocket is hard to stuff, is there a way to make it easier?
Instead of stuffing simply lay the insert in the shell (hemp side up for BabyKicks Basic Pocket). It saves a step and still gives you the benefit of super absorbent natural fibers right where you need them!
  • Do BabyKicks Diapers have natural fibers against baby’s skin?
Yes, simply leave out the separate stay dry liner in the Organic Fitted and Premium Pocket or lay the insert inside the shell of the Basic Pocket, hemp side up (touching baby). Our Hemparoo Prefolds and JoeyBunz inserts can also be used directly against baby’s skin.
  • Do BabyKicks Diapers have a stay dry liner?
Yes, BabyKicks Organic Fitted and Premium Pocket Diaper come with a separate stay dry liner, and BabyKicks Basic Pocket Diaper has a sewn in stay dry liner.

You could try using a BabyKicks Hemp Prefold folded into thirds along with the included JoeyBunz. + common mistakes/quick tips:  check the rise & settings of diaper ...
  • How do I stuff a diaper?
This is simple: Hold the insert on one end, then open the pocket of the diaper with the other hand and stuff the insert into the open pocket. When you pull the stuffing hand back, smooth the insert. Make sure the insert is straightened out from one to the other side and that they do not wrinkle. The insert should not stick out of the pocket otherwise the moisture will infiltrate baby’s clothes. Do you think this is complicated? Try it two or three times and you will notice it takes just a few moments to finish this. It’s similar to stuffing a pillow!
  • Do I need to use a liner?
No. Our diapers are made with natural hemp and certified organic cotton making them excellent for babies with sensitive skin. However, if your baby does not like to feel wet, a separate stay dry liner can be used. Our Premium Pocket and Organic Fitted Diapers come with separate stay dry liners for those who prefer them, and our Basic Pocket Diaper comes with a complete stay dry lining inside.
  • Why do I need to use an insert with the Organic Fitted?
We have designed our Organic Fitted to be a versatile fitted diaper that will fit your child from birth through potty learning. The diaper is absorbent enough to accommodate both newborns and potty learning toddlers without an insert, but has a pocket for extra absorbency during the ‘in between’ stages that make up the bulk of the diapering years. This way parents can customize the diapers to their child’s needs at any age.
  • Why does the fabric bunch in the front?
When the diaper is on a smaller setting the fabric will bunch slightly in the front causing a ‘bump’. Arranging the front snaps in a unique ‘V’ shape automatically adjusts the width of the crotch to make the diaper more comfortable for your baby. The ‘bump’ also keeps baby’s legs in the proper 90° hip alignment (more on that here). If you don’t want the ‘bump’ there you can fold the front flap of the diaper into the pocket, pull the wings over, and use a Snappi to secure it in place. Here’s a video showing how to do it.
  • Do I have to use a separate cover with the Organic Fitted?
A separate cover is recommended. Any type of cover can be used whether PUL, fleece, or wool. In experience we have found that with frequent changing a cover may not always be required. Of course, the length of time will vary based on wetting habits. Going coverless is a great option so your child’s skin can breathe, which prevents rashes. For complete waterproof protection a cover must be worn. Here’s a Quick Tip about another option to using a cover without sacrificing protection.
  • How do you fold your one size diapers to fit a newborn?
This is very easy to do! And, it’s much easier to see than to explain.  For our Fitted Diapers check out this video for our Pocket Diapers have a look here. In general check-out our Product and Quick Tip videos in our Classroom Section for many more great tips and tricks!
  • Can I use a Snappi on BabyKicks hemp products?
Absolutely! There is a myth that Snappi’s don’t grip hemp very well, but it is just that… a myth. You can even use a Snappi on our Organic Fitted!
  • How do I stuff my insert?
It’s very easy – just follow the following steps:
    1. Hold the insert on the end that will be in the back of the diaper
    2. Open the pocket of the diaper with the other hand
    3. Stuff the insert into the open pocket by pulling the diaper over your hand and arm until the insert is all the way in the back
    4. Hold the diaper and insert firmly in place while you pull your stuffing hand out of the diaper
    5. As you pull your hand out of the diaper make sure the insert is smooth and flat inside the diaper
    6. It may take some practice to get it perfect, but with all the diapers you’ll be changing everyday you’ll be a Pro in no time!

  • My diapers are rough, what can I do to soften them up?

This can happen for a number of reasons including detergent buildup and hard water. We recommend stripping the diapers first with at least three hot water washes and no detergent. Also, try adding white vinegar to the rinse to help soften the diapers, or add some Ecover Fabric Softener. It is cloth diaper safe, but don’t use it every time, only 1-2x per month. Also, dry in the dryer on low-medium heat completely or for 15 minutes after line drying (make sure they are still a little damp when you take them off the line)

Inserts & PreFolds

Bleach or enzymes are the main cause of premature wear in natural products. If you feel that you have a defective product, please go to our Care & Warranty sections and follow the instructions there.
  • What is the difference between the Babykicks Hemparoo and the Babykicks Inserts?
There is no difference, they are the same thing! "Hemparoo" was the original name for BabyKicks JoeyBunz to highlight the material they are made with. The name "Hemparoo" is still used interchangeably with many of our hemp products today.
  • Do the one size JoeyBunz have the same absorbency as the JoeyBunz and the Premium JoeyBunz? Will they be too bulky to use with a newborn?
The OneSize JoeyBunz are the same as the regular JoeyBunz except they are only contoured on one end. The other end is tapered allowing it to be folded to whatever size you need. Since our JoeyBunz are so thin, they work great for smaller babies and newborns. Another option for newborns is to use one of our Premium Washies folded in half, or two of our regular Washies folded in half. They are thin and the perfect size for newborn baby bottoms.
  • What size JoeyBunz should I use?
You should use JoeyBunz that are appropriate to the size of your child and the diaper you will be using them in.
    • Small JoeyBunz fit from newborn up to about 6 months.
    • Medium JoeyBunz fit from about 6 months to 18 months.
    • Large JoeyBunz fit from about 18 months up.
All sizes of our JoeyBunz can be used as doublers once your child has grown out of a smaller size, increasing their use. Also, these size guidelines are approximate. Many parents never need a Large size JoeyBunz because the Medium fits their child through Potty Learning.
  • Do JoeyBunz Fit in other diaper brands?
Yes! BabyKicks JoeyBunz can be used in virtually other brands of diapers as replacement inserts or doublers.
  • What’s the difference between the JoeyBunz and Premium JoeyBunz?
The regular JoeyBunz are made with 6 layers of our hemp jersey blend, sewn all together. The Premium JoeyBunz are made with 4 layers of our hemp fleece blend and are sewn in layers of two then tacked at the top. This allows the Premium JoeyBunz to wash up very well and dry a little faster. The split design also makes customizing absorbency easy by simply folding one layer over for added material in your baby’s wet zone.  Here is a video that explains it.
  • Do you have a video that explains how to fold PreFolds?
Yes we do – how did you know?  Click here - it's on the right hand side in the Description tab. BTW:  check out our Video Section in the BabyKicks Classroom - so much to discover there!

  • Are all of your company’s products made with Certified Organic Material?
Yes. Whether it’s the entire item, like our Prefolds and JoeyBunz, or part of it, like the insert of our Basic Pocket Diaper, in some portion all of our products are made with natural and certified organic materials with the sole exception being our Swim Diaper.
  • Why does your company use hemp?
We use hemp because of its durability, absorbency, and it’s natural anti-microbial properties. This means your baby will be protected naturally from bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus. Plus, it’s GREAT for the environment!
